The Peanuts debuted in comic strips on October 2, 1950, in seven American newspapers that introduced the world to Charlie Brown and his friends. The panels depicted their everyday lives and introduced new characters and stories until the 2000s.
Snoopy was first introduced on October 4, 1950, just two days after the initial appearance of the comic strip. Soon, readers would discover that Snoopy was no ordinary dog.
Initially, Snoopy was introduced as an only child, but Snoopy’s family tree eventually grew. In the comic strips, five siblings were introduced: four brothers, Spike, Marbles, Olaf, and Andy, and one sister, Belle.
According to his official profile on the Peanuts website, Snoopy is a Beagle. Schulz had several dogs throughout his life, but it was his childhood dog, Spike, that served as the greatest inspiration for Snoopy.
According to Schulz, the black and white dog was particularly intelligent. In 1983, the cartoonist recounted that Spike could understand at least 50 words, and this intelligence and cleverness became part of Snoopy’s character.
Despite being a dog, Snoopy’s abilities seemingly have no limits. The clever Beagle who “collects art” and “is a root beer connoisseur,” according to his profile, can be whoever he wants with the help of his vast and imaginative imagination.
